BORN BEVERLEY, 1877. THIRD AND ONLY SURVIVING SON OF JOHN SUTHERLAND (1832-1896) AND MARGARET MUCKERSIE (1836-1908). HIS FATHER WAS A POLICE INSPECTOR.
HE JOINED THE EYR AS A DRUMMER BOY ON LEAVING SCHOOL. SERVED 21 YEARS IN THE EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT, HOME AND ABROAD BEFORE RETIRING.
AT THE OUTBREAK OF WAR, ENLISTED BEVERLEY. PROMOTED TO COMPANY SERGEANT MAJOR AND TRAINING INSTRUCTOR FOR KITCHENERS NEW ARMY. HE WAS DRAFTED TO INDIA IN 1916 AND ATTACHED TO THE YORKSHIRE REGIMENT.
WELL KNOWN IN HULL, HIS SISTER, EMMA ISABEL SUTHERLAND, WAS HEAD TEACHER OF ST PAUL’S SCHOOL.
HE DIED IN INDIA OF INFLUENZA. HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL ON 22ND NOVEMBER 1918.
