BORN BRADFORD 1872. WIFE MARTHA TENNANT ABOVE ADDRESS. HIS PARENTS LIVED AT 36 ALDBOROUGH TERRACE, SCOTT STREET. BEFORE THE WAR HE SERVED ON HULL CUTTER AND RESIDED WITH HIS PARENTS AT THIS ADDRESS. JOHN WAS INVOLVED IN A TRAIN DE-RAILMENT AT NEWARK IN 1915 AND WAS AWARDED A SILVER WATCH BY THE GREAT NORTHERN RAILWAY COMPANY FOR RESCUING THE PASSENGERS. HIS AWARD WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL ON THE 2ND NOVEMBER 1915. *
HE DIED AT SEA ON THE 17TH FEBRUARY 1917. HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL, ON 02/03/1917. *

HMT HAWK, built by Edwards Bros., Howden-on-Tyne in 1897 and operated at the time of her loss by the Royal Navy, was a British navy trawler of 243 tons. On 5 June 1915, HAWK rammed and sank the German submarine U-14, off Peterhead, On February 17th, 1917, HMT HAWK was sunk by the German submarine U-64 (Robert Moraht), 140 miles SExS from Malta while escorting a convoy. 7 persons were lost.
