One of the original Pals, he trained with the battalion in Hornsea, Beverley and Ripon throughout 1915 and sailed for Egypt that December where he helped defend the Suez Canal from the Turks. Arriving in France in March 1916, Bernard was a veteran of the Somme and Oppy Wood, when the early morning mist of 13th April 1918 found him dug into defensive positions close to the Franco-Belgian border. The Germans attacked in the small hours, but were driven back by machine gun fire from the 10th. They attacked again in the afternoon and were again repelled. Somewhere out there Bernard was killed in action. He was buried behind the lines and his body was exhumed after the Armistice. His grave lies in Outtensteene Communal Cemetery Extension, Bailleul.
