Lieutenant, Greville Wynn Thomas, 4th Gurkha Rifles

BORN LIVERPOOL 1897. ELDEST SON OF REV. LLEWELYN WYBE & HELEN PENELOPE THOMAS, THE NEWLAND VICARAGE AND WAVETREE, LANCS. HULL PROBATE ADDRESS ABOVE. HE WAS EDUCATED AT OXFORD PREPARATORY SCHOOL OBTAINED A SCHOLARSHIP AT ROSSALL. HE CAPTAINED THE SCHOOL FOOTBALL, HOCKEY AND SWIMMING TEAMS. WAS A QUARTERMASTER SERGEANT, IN THE SCHOOL CADETS.

IN APRIL 1915 HE SAILED TO INDIA. WAS COMMISSIONED SIX MONTHS LATER IN THE 2/4TH GURKHA RIFLES.

AFTER SERVING ON THE NORTH WEST FRONTIER, HE WAS POSTED TO MESOPOTAMIA. HE SERVED AT KUT WAS WOUNDED AND INVALIDED BACK TO INDIA AND THEN PALESTINE. HE WAS KILLED IN ACTION, ON 10/04/1918, AGED 21.

HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL ON THE 22ND MARCH 1918, AND 18TH APRIL, 1918, WITH HIS PHOTOGRAPH. *
HIS BROTHER, SECOND LIEUTENANT, ERIC HAND THOMAS, OF THE WEST RIDING REGIMENT, WAS SADLY KILLED IN FRANCE, IN DECEMBER 1917.

BOTH BROTHERS ARE COMMEMORATED ON THE WW1 MEMORIAL AT ST JOHNS CHURCH, NEWLAND, CLOUGH ROAD, HULL.
