Tong, Stanley

Born Kirk Ella, Hull, on 18/02/1893. Son of Nicholas Tong (1856-1945) and Rebecca Welbourn (1860-1938), of Knaresborough, West Yorkshire and 23, Coronation Avenue, Harrogate (CWGC address). Son of a coachman. He had four brothers and three sisters.

Enlisted as a Boy sailor in the Royal Navy, on 10/12/1913. Described as 5 foot, 8.5 inches tall, 33.5 inch chest, brown eyes, brown hair, small scar on nose. Invalided, with Pulmonary tuberculosis, on 07/10/1914. Died at Knaresborough, Yorkshire West Riding, on 12/05/1915, aged 22. Awarded the British War Medal.

His brothers, Fred (1888-1920) and Percy (1890-1927), served in the Navy and Lawrence Tong (1898-1921) served in the Royal Air Force.

He is buried at Harrogate Cemetery in a CWGC grave , with his brother Fred, who died on 17/04/1920, aged 31.
