BORN HULL 1894. SON OF CHARLES SMITH TOWNEND (1870-1908) AND MARTHA ANN SAUNDERS (1872-1934), OF 6 TEMPERENCE BUILDINGS, SWANN STREET, HULL. AN EARLES, SHIP YARD WORKER. ON 22/03/1913, AT ST CHARLES BORROMEO CHURCH, HULL, HE MARRIED JANE ELIZABETH GARVEY (1893-1972). THEY HAD TWO CHILDREN, GERTRUDE AND WALTER.

HE ENLISTED AT HULL. SERVED WITH THE 12 WEST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT. AT THE BATTLE OF LOOS, HE WAS REPORTED MISSING AND THEN KILLED IN ACTION, ON 27/09/1915, AGED 23.

HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL, ON 30/03/1916. * HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO HIS WIDOW JANE E. (KEABLE) AND TWO CHILDREN.

HIS NAME IS RECORDED ON ON ST CHARLES’ BORROMEO CHURCH WW1 MEMORIAL.

HE LEFT ONLY BROTHER, CHARLES WILLIAM TOWNEND, AND THREE SISTERS, ALICE, GERTRUDE AND ETHEL.
