Trussel, John Henry

BORN HULL 12/02/1873. SON OF ROBERT JAMES TRUSSEL (1823-1883) & SARAH ROBINSON (1826-1892), OF 13 BACK STREET, SUTTON, HULL. HE JOINED THE MERCHANT NAVY, IN 1890, AGED 21. HE MARRIED ELIZABETH JENKINS (1874-1913), ON 26/04/1898 AND HAD FOUR DAUGHTERS AND A SON. HE MARRIED, HILDA MAINWARING (1883-1946), IN 1915 AND HADANOTHER  TWO DAUGHTERS. HIS WIFE HILDA LIVED AT 14 ST GEORGES ROAD, SWANSEA.

HE SERVED IN THE ROYAL NAVAL RESERVE, AS AN ENGINEMAN, ON THE TRAWLER, ‘FULMAR’. LOST AT SEA, WHILE MINESWEEPING, ON 17/01/1916, AGED 44. HE LEFT £130 IN HIS WILL TO HIS WIDOW, HILDA. HIS NAME IS LISTED IN THE HULL NAVY RECORDS.

Built as the FULMAR (H25) for Pickering & Haldane’s Steam Trawling Co., Hull. On 10/09/1912 vessel sold to William J. Barrett (GY769). On 14/03/1913 vessel sold to G. E. Forum, Denmark (the Danish company was a nominal owner for William Barrett to allow vessel to fish in the Moray Firth, as British trawlers were banned from the area). On 31/03/1915 vessel sold back to Barrett, Grimsby (GY470).
In 1915 vessel Requisitioned by the Royal Navy as a mine-sweeper No. FY1756.
On 17/01/1916 the HMT FULMAR was sunk by mine in the Gulf of Sollum.
