Turnbull, Wilson

Private, Wilson Turnbull, 12th EYR, 13/11/1916, aged 21.

BORN HEDON 1896. LIVED HULL. SON OF THOMAS & SARAH ANN TURNBULL MAGDELAN ROAD, HEDON. ENLISTED IN THE HULL PALS. KILLED IN ACTION AT BEAUMONT HAMEL, ON 13/11/1916, AGED 21. HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO HIS FATHER.
Hull Pals Memorial Post. PRIVATE WILSON TURNBULL 14/199. Born in October 1895 Wilson was the youngest of three children to Thomas and Sarah Ann Turnbull of Magdelen Road, Hedon, Hull. Little can be uncovered about his life before the war. He was still a schoolboy at the time of the 1911 Census, and although he was old enough to enlist, which he did at Hull City Hall, he was still little more than a boy. Wilson joined the 14th Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment before transferring to the 12th. He was killed in action on 13th November 1916 and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial. The war achieved nothing that day; and two things went largely unnoticed by those who sent a generation to fight: a young man of 21 lost his life and his body disappeared forever beneath the mud of the Somme; and a family from Hedon lost their youngest son.
