Unwin, John Edward

Born Clay Cross, Derbyshire, 1884. Son of John Henry and Mary Unwin, of Clay Cross, Chesterfield; husband of Lilian Unwin, of 85, Monmouth St., Sheffield (CWGC records). He worked as  a Railway Porter.

Enlisted at Nottingham. Formerly 16765, East Yorkshire Regiment. Transferred to the 2nd Prince of Wales’s Own (West Yorkshire) Regiment. Killed in action, on 16 Aug 1917, aged 34. Commemorated at the Tyne Cot memorial, Belgium. his army effects were left to his widow, Lilian.

Married at Ecclesall Bierlow, 1907. Husband of Lilian Unwin, of 51 Northfield Road, Sheffield.(1911 Census) and 308, Holderness Road, Hull (war Pension address). They had two sons, Leslie Vernon and Ralph Hubert Unwin. She remarried and became Mrs Butler.
