Waite DSO, MID, Clement William

BORN BLOFIELD, NORFOLK, 1892. ELDEST SON OF GEORGE HENRY WAITE (1865-1920) AND ISABELLA BARTINDALE (1863-1947). SON OF A DRAPER MANAGER AND SHOP KEEPER, AT  STAION ROAD, HESSLE. HE HAD A BROTHER, GEORGE AND SISTER DAISY.

HUSBAND OF VERA CYNTHIA KINGSLEY (1897-1961) OF 120 WESTBOURNE AVENUE, HULL (PRISONER OF WAR RECORDS) AND THEN ‘ST LEONARD’S’, BEVERLEY HIGH ROAD, HULL (ARMY MEDAL INDEX CARD).

HE ENLISTED AS PRIVATE, C. W. WAITE,100, 10TH EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT, ON 01/09/1914. HIS ARMY RECORDS DESCRIBE HIM AS, 5 FOOT 10 INCHES TALL, 170 LBS, BLUE EYES, FAIR HAIR.

HE SERVED IN EGYPT. PROMOTED THROUGH THE RANKS. BECAME TEMPORARY 2ND LIEUTENANT, IN THE 13TH EYR. (LONDON GAZETTE FEBRUARY 1915). PROMOTED CAPTAIN IN THE 11TH EYR. BECAME A LIEUTENANT COLONEL AND TAKEN PRISONER OF WAR ON 12/04/1918. WAS MENTIONED IN DESPATCHES AND AWARDED THE DISTINGUISHED SERVICE ORDER IN THE KINGS HONOURS LIST 03/06/1918 (NO CITATION). REPATRIATED CHRISTMAS DAY 1918,

HE HAD RECENTLY MARRIED ON LEAVE AND ARRANGED A HOLIDAY WITH HIS WIFE IN BOURNEMOUTH. HE DIED ACCIDENTALLY ON 30/1/1919. HIS BODY WAS FOUND FIVE WEEKS LATER IN THE RIVER YARE, NORWICH. HE WAS A TEMPORARY MAJOR IN 11TH EYR AT THE TIME. HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED AS SUICIDE FOLLOWING HIS WAR EXPERIENCES. (BLOWN UP THREE TIMES, SUFFERED TRENCH FEVER, INFLUENZA TWICE AND HAD BEEN STARVED AS A PRISONER OF WAR).

HE WAS BURIED IN BRIDLINGTON WITH A MILITARY FUNERAL. HE LEFT £780 IN HIS WILL TO HIS WIDOW. SHE REMARRIED AND MOVED TO “RED TILES”, THE AVENUE, POTTERS BAR, MIDDLESEX.
