BORN HULL 31/12/1893. SON OF LATE JOHN HOLLINGWORTH WAKERLEY (1865-1905)& MARY JANE TURNER (1869-1915), OF 18 HUMBER AVENUE, WEST DOCK STREET, HULL. A SHIP’S FIREMAN. HUSBAND OF AMELIA ENGLISH, AT 12 TICHBOURNE TERRACE, BEAN STREET, HULL & THEN LONDON. HIS BROTHER CHARLES WAKERLEY  WAS LOST AT SEA, ON THE HULL TRAWLER “JERSEY”, ON 05/11/ 1915, AGED 23 AND LIVED AT 61 HAVELOCK STREET, HULL.

SS ANCONA, built by Ramage & Ferguson, Leith in 1888 and owned at the time of her loss by J. Hall, Jun. & Co., London, was a British steamer of 1.168 tons. ANCONA, on voyage from Alloa to Konigsberg with coal, collided on June 25th, 1905 with the Danish training ship GEORG STAGE (Stockholm-Copenhagen), almost cutting her in two pieces and sinking her in 2 minutes. 22 cadets of the Marine were drowned. 58 cadets and officers were saved by the ANCONA. On September 6th, 1916 ANCONA was damaged by submarine gunfire, but not sunk. On May, 28th 1917, SS ANCONA was on passage from Falmouth to Lisbon and Spanish ports with general cargo, when she was sunk by the German submarine UC-70 (Werner Fürbringer), 110 miles WSW of Ushant (Ouessant). There were no survivors (25 crew and 1 passenger). Jan Lettens 28/02/2012 ANCONA, on voyage from Alloa to Konigsberg with coal, collided on June 25th, 1905 with the Danish training ship GEORG STAGE (Stockholm-Copenhagen), almost cutting her in two pieces. The accident happened at midnight and GEORG STAGE sank in 2 minutes, taking with her 22 cadets of the Marine. 58 cadets and 10 officers were saved by the ANCONA.
