Captain, Roger Beverley WALKER, MC

BORN SCARBOROUGH 23/06/1886. YOUNGEST SON OF CAPTAIN, EDWYN M. WALKER , 15TH HUSSARS, (1838-1919) & ELIZABETH BETHELL (1851-1915), OF MILL HOUSE, YORK.

HE WAS EDUCATED AT LEEDS UNIVERSITY AND QUALIFIED AS AN ELECTRICAL ENGINEER IN 1911. A KEEN CRICKETER HE PLAYED FOR THE WELLINGTON SCHOLL XI.

HE WORKED IN LEEDS AND THE NORTH EASTERN RAILWAY IN DARLINGTON. HE HAD JOINED THE YORKSHIRE HUSSAR YEOMANRY ON 1/06/1908 AS A TERRITORIAL SOLDIER. HE LEFT FOR FRANCE ON 17/04/1915. HE WAS AWARDED THE MILITARY CROSS ON 15/04/1918 FOR BRAVERY, LEADING AND PREPARING A SUCCESSFUL TRENCH RAID. HE WAS KILLED IN THE ATTACK ON THE HINDENBURG LINE. WHILE LEADING OVER OPEN GROUND HE WAS HIT BY MACHINE GUN BULLETS TO BOTH LEGS ABOVE THE KNEE. HE DIED OF ABDOMINAL COMPLICATIONS AT A CLEARING STATION ON 13/11/1918. HE WAS UNMARRIED AND AGED 31. A DETAILED RECORD OF HIS WAR SERVICE CAN BE FOUND IN THE UK ELECTRICAL ENGINEERS ROLL OF HONOUR. HE IS BURIED ATÂ TERLINCTHUN BRITISH CEMETERY, WIMILLE, FRANCE.

ROGER’S DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL, ON 16/11/1918. HE LEFT A FORTUNE OF £29,705 IN HIS WILL TO HIS SISTER DOROTHY KATHERINE BREWIS (1883-1977), WIFE OF FRANCIS BERTIE BREWIS, AND JAMES WILLIS MILLS, SOLICITOR.

HIS FATHER DIED IN 1919 AGED 81, HIS MOTHER DIED ON 25/10/1915, AGED 65, AFTER THE LOSS OF HER TWO SONS IN THE WAR.

HIS TWO BROTHERS WERE BOTH KILLED IN 1914. THEY WERE: –

MAJOR, WILFRED BECKETT WALKER, 1ST YORKSHIRE HUSSARS, KILLED AT YPRES 29/10/1914, AGED 38, AND

CAPTAIN, OSWALD BETHELL WALKER, 15TH HUSSARS, DIED AT MONS 23/08/1914, AGED 39.

ANOTHER BROTHER, EDWYN G. WALKER, WAS A BARRISTER IN THE INNER TEMPLE, LONDON AND WAS ACCIDENTALLY KILLED IN A STEEPLECHASE RACE, ON 05/04/1910, AGED 31.

A MEMORIAL WAS ERECTED BY THEIR ONLY SISTER, DOROTHY KATHERINE BREWIS, TO ALL FOUR BROTHERS
