Watson, Sydney (Syd)

BORN HULL 29/10/1893. SON OF THE MARTHA SARAH ANN BLOOM (1854-1940) & FREDERICK WATSON (1853-1914), AT 4, ELSIE GROVE, FLINTON STREET, HULL (CWGC ADDRSS). HE HAD TWO BRORS AND SIX SISTER. HIS FATHER WAS A COAL TEAMER AT THE ALBERT DOCKS IN HULL. SYDNEY WAS EDUCATED AT SCARBOROUGH STREET COUNCIL SCHOOL. WORKED AS A CRANE DRIVER AT ALBERT DOCKS. HE ENLISTED IN HULL, ON 10TH SEPTEMBER 1914. JOINED THE 8th PRINCE OF WALES DRAGOON GUARDS. TRANSFERRED TO THE 3RD BN. POSTED TO FRANCE ON 16TH JUNE 1915. KILLED IN ACTION AT THE BATTLE OF LOOS ON 25TH SEPTEMBER 1915, AGED 21.

A COMRADE WROTE THAT HE WAS “EVER WILLING TO HELP, EVER CHEERFUL, AND AN ACQUISITION TO THE ROOM AND THE TROOP AND THE SQUADRON TO WHICH HE BELONGED.” HE IS BURIED AT LOOS.
HIS LOSS WAS RECORDED IN THE DE RUVIGNY ROLL OF HONOUR, VOLUME 2. HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL TIMES, ON 30TH OCTOBER 1915, WITH HIS PHOTOGRAPH. *
