Private, James Charles Watts, 5th Yorkshire Regiment

BORN ALDERSHOT, 1875, INTO AN ARMY FAMILY. ONE OF FOUNTEEN CHILDREN, SEVERAL OF WHICH ALSO JOINED THE FORCES.

HE MOVED FROM ALDERSHOT TO BEVERLEY VIA SHEFFIELD. HE MARRIED ROSA BUTTERS, IN BEVERLEY, IN 1903 AND HAD TWO CHILDREN, CHARLES AND WILFRED.

HE HAD SERVED IN THE EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT FROM 1891-1908 AND THEN WORKED IN A LOCAL TANERY. HE REMAINED IN THE TERRITORIALS BEFORE THE WAR STARTED

HE ENLISTED IN BEVERLEY. SERVED WITH THE 5TH YORKSHIRE REGIMENT AND WAS KILLED AT SANCTUARY WOOD, EAST OF YPRES, ON 27/02/1916, AGED 41.

A FAMILY STORY SAYS TTHAT HE WAS A DEVOUT ROMAN CATHOLIC AND WAS TRYING TO RESCUE A CROSS FROM A CHURCH WHEN HE WAS KILLED. HE IS BURIED IN BELGIUM.

HIS NAME IS RECORDED ON THE BEVERLEY WAR MEMORIAL, MEMORIAL GARDENS.
