BORN HULL 1886. ELDEST SON OF HENRY WEST (1844-1911) & SARAH DOUGLAS (1855-1930), OF 6, KING’S CROSS TERRACE, BEAN STREET, HULL. SON OF A (NER) RAILWAY LABOURER. HE HAD TWO BROTHERS AND FOUR SISTERS.

HE JOINED THE ARTILLERY 14 YEARS AGO AND HAD BEEN IN FRANCE FOR OVER TWO YEARS. AT THE COMMENCEMENT OF WAR, HE WAS TRAINING RECRUITS, BUT INSISTED ON GOING TO THE FRONT. AS A BATTERY SERGEANT, HE HAD IMMENSE RESPONSIBILITY AND WAS ALWAyS IN THE THICK OF THE ACTION. HE WAS KILLED IN ACTION, WITH ANOTHER OFFICER, ON 16/05/1917, AGED 31. BURIED IN FRANCE.

HE IS LISTED ON THE WAR MEMORIAL AT ST MATTHEWS CHURCH, BOULEVARD, WITH BROTHER, PRIVATE,  ARTHUR WEST, KILLED ON 03/06/1916. HE IS ALSO RECORDED ON THE BEAN STREET ROLL OF HONOUR (Hull Daily Mail 11 October 1916).

Battery Sergeant Major H H West 32276. Unit: A Battery, 51st Brigade, Royal Field Artillery (9th Scottish Division). Death: 16 May 1917 Killed in action at the battle of Arras Western Front. Son of Henry and Sara West, of Hull. CWGC has date of death as 16 May 1917. Buried at Feuchy British Cemetery.
