Burstwick WW1 Memorial, 132 Main Street. Unveiled on 10th July 1920, by Colonel R Hall;

Born Fulstow, Lincolnshire, 1891. Son of Espin West (1845-1908) and Mary Dobson, of Fulstow, Lincolnshire. He had a brother Henry Francis West and sisters, Margaret Lucy Broughton and Elsie Ellen Tanner.

He lived in Burstwick, working as a horseman on a farm and labourer. Described as 5 foot, 4 inches tall, chest size 37-38 inches, 130 lbs weight, Church of England religion.

He married Laura Fisher Drewery (1893-1969), at Burstwick, on 31 Oct 1914. Husband of Laura and father of two sons, Fred and William Arthur West. They lived in Burstwick.

Enlisted Hull on 24/06/1916. Served with the 1st East Yorkshire Regiment. Posted to France, on 12/12/1916. Killed in action, on 24/02/1917, aged 26. His grave inscription reads, “TRUE TO THE END R.I.P”
