Maurice Victor Whittle

BORN HULL 1897. SON OF JAMES WHITTLE (1861-1937) & SARAH ANN DRESSER (1863-1927) WHITTLE, OF 54, ROSMEAD STREET, HULL (WAR PENSION ADDRESS). HIS FATHER WAS A FORMER SOLDIER AND MAURICE WAS ONE OF FIVE SONS SERVING. (ONE IN THE 4TH EYR, TWO SONS IN THE ROYAL ENGINEER’S, AND THE OTHER LATER DISCHARGED TO WORK IN MUNITIONS). THEY ARE ALL PHOTOGRAPHED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL, ON 13TH SEPTEMBER 1915. CLARENCE, JAMES AND ERNEST SERVED WITH THE ROYAL ENGINEERS, ALEC WAS ALSO SERVING WITH 4TH EYR.

MAURICE WHITTLE ENLISTED WHEN HE WAS 17. POSTED TO FRANCE ON 01/09/1915. HE HAD SERVED IN FRANCE FOR ELEVEN MONTHS. HE DIED OF WOUNDS ON THE SOMME, THREE WEEKS AFTER HIS NINETEENTH BIRTHDAY. HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL ON THE 9TH SEPTEMBER 1916, WITH HIS PHOTOGRAPH. *
ALL FIVE BROTHERS, ARE PHOTOGRAPHED, IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL ON THE 13TH SEPTEMBER 1915. THERE WERE SOME 20 FAMILY MEMBERS WHO SERVED IN THE WAR. *
