Wigby, Benjamin

BORN THUMGUMBALD, EAST YORKSHIRE, 1896.  SON OF ARTHUR & MARY WIGBY, OF 217 HALLGATE, COTTINGHAM. A FORMER GROCER’S ASSISTANT. HE WAS EMPLOYED BY MESSRS, WILLIAM CUSSONS & SONS, AT WITHERNSEA. SERVED HIS APPRENERSHIP IN COTTINGHAM. RESIDED WITH HIS PARENTS.

HE ENLISTED IN HULL. FORMERLY,  PRIVATE, 285 EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT. TRANSFERRED AND PROMOTED TO SERGEANT IN THE MACHINE GUN CORPS. KILLED IN ACTION, ON 04/08/1916, AGED 20. HIS COMMANDING OFFICER WROTE HE WAS CAIGHT BY MACHINE GUN FIRE AND WAS KILLED INSTANTLY. “HE WAS A MOST EXCELLENT SOLDIER AND ALL OFFICERS HAD A VERY HIGH OPINION OF HIM.”

HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL, ON 14/08/1916. *

HIS NAME IS LISTED ON THE COTTINGHAM WAR MEMORIAL.  HIS NAME IS ALSO RECORDED ON THE COTTINGHAM METHODIST CHURCH WW1 PLAQUE.
