Sydney Wilburn

BORN HULL 13/08/1888. SON OF ANTHONY & CLARA KATE WILBURN (1862-1924). HE LIVED IN THE WORKHOUSE WITH HIS MOTHER, AND BROTHER, WALTER, UNTIL HE WAS ADOPTED, BY JOHN AND MARIA HUNT OF ELSTRONWICK, AGED 13.

BEFORE THE WAR HE WORKED FOR CROWLE & SONS IRON & STEEL WORKS.

HE WAS ALSO A  ‘HULL HARRIER’ AND RAN IN THE EIGHT MILE HANDICAP RACE HELD ON THE 21/02/1914. HE WAS ONE OF SIX MEN OUT OF THE 19 RUNNERS IN THE RACE TO DIE IN THE GREAT WAR.

HE ENLISTED AT PONTEFRACT, IN 1915. SERVED WITH THE 1/7TH MIDDLESEX REGIMENT. KILLED IN ACTION, 30/08/1918, AGED 30. BURIED IN FRANCE.

HE MARRIED, ELIZABETH MARJORIE HUMPHRIES (1895-1980), AT SHEFFIELD, IN SEPTEMBER 1916. THEY LIVED AT 47 RAILWAY COTTAGES, DAIRYCOATES, AND 1, HAWTHORNE GROVE, PULMAN STREET, HULL (WAR PENSION ADDRESS)

HIS DEATH & PHOTOGRAPH WERE REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL ON 23RD SEPTEMBER 1918.
HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO HIS WIDOW, ELIZABETH AND DAUGHTER, ETHEL GRACE (BORN 04/09/1916). HIS WIDOW RE-MARRIED TO JAMES LEONARD WOOD, AND MOVED TO SHEFFIELD.
