Wilks, John William

BORN HULL 1883. SON OF JOSEPH & HANNAH MARGARET WILKS. A SHOP ENGINE BLACKSMITH. RESIDING WITH HIS SISTER, AT 7 KIMBERLEY GROVE, FLINTON STREET, HESSLE ROAD (1911 CENSUS).

HE ENLISTED IN THE HULL PALS. SERVED IN EGYPT AND FRANCE. PROMOTED CORPORAL, AND TRANSFERRED TO THE 7TH EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT. HE WAS KILLED IN ACTION, ON 05/11/1916, AGED 33. HE IS COMMEMORATED ON THIEPVAL MEMORIAL TO THE MISSING ON THE SOMME.  HIS WAR PENSION WAS AWARDED TO MARGARET WILKS AT 70 WALCOTT STREET, HULL.

HIS DEATH WAS ALSO REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL ON THE 28TH NOVEMBER 1916, WITH HIS PHOTOGRAPH. *

HIS BROTHER, CHARLES PYE WILKS SERVED IN THE ROYAL NAVAL RESERVE DURING THE WAR.
