Lance Corporal George Willison (1888-1916) of Beverley

George Willison was born in 1888 in Hornsea, the son of Stephen Willison (1853-1931) and Betsy Robinson (1863-1954), of 59 Flemingate, Beverley (War Pension address). He had four brothers and two sisters. His family were farm labourers.

He was a professional soldier who enlisted at Beverley (1911 Census). He served as Private,8285, in the 1st East Yorkshire Regiment where he was wounded. Transferred to the Machine Gun Corps (Infantry), 18th Coy. Promoted to Lance Corporal He was died of wounds on 12 October 1916, aged 28.

He is buried in the Thiepval Cemetery in France. His army effects were left to his father, Stephen.

He was awarded the 1915 War Star, the British War Medal and the Victory Medal.

His brother, Stoker, First Class, Arthur Willison, 17669, Royal Navy, HMS Bulwark, was killed on 26/11/1914, aged 21.
