Born Usworth Springwell, Durham, 1897. Son of James henry Witts and Sarah Ellen Witts. He had one brother, Fred. Worked as a rope lad in the coal mines. He was 5 foot, 6.5 inches tall, 148 lbs weight, 37-39.5 inch chest, brown eyes, brown hair.
He married at Cardiff on 8/2/1915. Husband of Beatrice Alice Muir, of 18, Holme Street, Hull (War pension address). They had two sons, James and Thomas and daughter Ellen Mary.
He enlisted at Gateshead. Mobilized on 15/9/1916. Posted to France, on 18/4/1918. Formerly 202525 (I.W.T. R.E.). Transferred to the 15th Durham Light Infantry. he returned home on leave on 5/8/1918 and his wife became pregnant with their third child. He returned to the front. Died of wounds, on 09/11/1918.
