Born Goole, Yorkshire, 1896. Son of George Woffinden (1864-1948) and Mary Ann Elizabeth Charlton (1864-1934) of, St Mark Place Bucther Row Beverley (1911 Census), Clark’s Yard, Wilbert Lane, Beverley, 13 Waltham Terrace, Mill Lane, Beverley (army address) and 4. Nelson Square, New George Street, Hull (War Pension Address). Son of a Gardener. He had two elder sisters, Constance and Ada and a brother, James Thomas.
A Labourer. He had previously served with the 3rd East Yorkshire Regiment. Described as 5 foot, 6 inches tall, 36-38.5 inch chest, vaccination mark on left arm.
He enlisted at Beverley, on 10th December 1915, aged 19. Called up on 20th January 1916. Posted to France, on 3rd June 1916. Posted to the 10th East Yorkshire Regiment (The Hull Commercials). Killed in action, on 22/09/1916, aged 19. his army effects were left to his parents, Mary and George.
His younger brother, Private, James Thomas Woffinden, 1st Easy Yorkshire Regiment was killed three days later, on 25/09/1916, aged 17 and is commemorated on the Thiepval memorial, France.
