Hull Pals Memorial Post. PRIVATE GEORGE HERBERT WOLLAS MM 12/1526. Born in 1890, George was the youngest of 15 children to William and Harriet Wollas of 250 Northgate, Cottingham. A Waggoner living and working on a farm out at Bilton before the war, he travelled into Hull to enlist joining the 12th Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment, ‘The Sportsmen’, 3rd Hull Pals. George was listed missing presumed killed on 13th November 1916 as the Pals attacked German positions dug into the remains of the French village of Serre in the last desperate act of the Somme campaign. His body was never recovered and his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial; he was 26 years old.
