BORN HULL 1898. SON OF CATHERINE GRIMES & JOSEPH NEVET WOOD, OF 5, PROVIDENCE PLACE, SPRING STREET, HULL (1901 CENSUS), 17, HOPE TERRACE, WALKER STREET, HULL (1911 CENSUS) AND 4, ROWLAND TERRACE, ST PAUL STREET, HULL (WAR PENSION & CWGC ADDRESS).
SON OF A RIVETTER. HIS FATHER SERVED IN THE ROYAL ENGINEERS DURING WW1. HE HAD TWO BROTHERS AND THREE SISTERS.
HE ENLISTED IN HULL, ON 07/09/1914, UNDER AGE. THIS WAS IS ARMY ADDRESS. HE SERVED WITH THE 7TH EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT. HE WAS KILLED IN ACTION, ON THE SOMME, ON 07/07/1916, AGED 18. HIS ARMY EFFECTS WENT TO HIS MOTHER, KATE. HIS BODY WAS NEVER FOUND AND HE IS COMMEMORATED ON THE THEIPVAL MEMORIAL.
HIS NAME IS LISTED ON THE HULL BOYS CLUB MEMORIAL, ROPER STREET, HULL, ALONG WITH HIS BROTHER, PRIVATE, JOSEPH WOOD, 2ND YORKSHIRE REGIMENT, KILLED IN ACTION, ON 02/04/1917, AGED 21.
BOTH BROTHERS ARE ALSO REMEMBERED ON THE ST CHARLES BORROMEO CHURCH, JARRATT STREET, HULL.
