Woodrow, Herbert Walter

BORN SOUTH HEIGHAM, NORWICH 1884. SON OF JOHN SAMUEL WOODROW (1846-1923) & FRANCES (KILLIGREW) WOODROW, AT 5, COZENS ROAD, THORPE, NORWICH (1911 CENSUS) AND 9, ST GEORGES AVENUE, BOURNEMOUTH STREET, HULL (WAR PENSION ADDRESS). HE HAD TWO BROTHERS AND THREE SISTERS.

WORKED AS A MACHINE PAINTER.

HE HAD ALSO SERVED 8 YEARS WITH THE NORFOLK REGIMENT AND 4 YEARS IN THE RESERVES. DESCRIBED AS 5 FOOT 10 INCHES TALL, 151 LBS, 38 INCH CHEST, BLUE EYES, LIGHT BROWN HAIR, AND OF ‘GOOD’ PHYSICAL DEVELOPMENT.

HE ENLISTED IN HULL, ON 07/09/1914 AGED 30 YEARS AND 6 MONTHS. ARRIVED IN FRANCE, ON 13/07/1915. RETURNED TO ENGLAND ON 13/05/1916 AND TRANSFERRED TO FRANCE AGAIN, ON 25/06/1916 TO THE 7TH EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT. HE WAS KILLED IN ACTION, ON THE SOMME, ON 10/07/1916, AGED 32. HE HAD SERVED FOR 1 YEAR AND 308 DAYS. COMMEMORATED ON THE THIEPVAL MEMORIAL TO THE MISSING.

HIS NAME IS INSCRIBED ON THE STONE PILLARS OF ST MARY’S CHURCH, SCULCOATES LANE, HULL.
UNMARRIED. HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO HIS FATHER, IN NORWICH. HE LEFT BROTHERS, FREDERICK AND BERTIE, AND SISTERS, FRANCES, NELLIE AND FLORENCE.
