On the 15th June 1915, the Hull vessel,  was torpedoed by the submarine UC-11, off the Harwich coast. All seven Hull fishermen were lost:

SS ‘CALYPSO’ sunk 11th July 1916

The Steamship ‘CALYPSO’ was a 2,876grt British Merchantship built in 1904 by Earle’s SB. & Eng. Co., Ltd., Hull and owned by T. Wilson, Sons & Co., Ltd., Hull . There was accommodation for 57-1st, 44-2nd and 863-3rd class passengers.
Taken up by the Admiralty in November 1914, she was renamed HMS CALYX and armed with 8 x 4.7inch and 2 x 3pounder guns. She served with the 10th Cruiser Squadron until 26.6.1915 when she was returned to the Wilson Line.
On the 10th July 1916, in the North Sea, when about 15 miles west of Listafjorden, Norway she was torpedoed without warning and sunk by German submarine U-53 when on route from London for Christiania carrying a general cargo. 30 lives lost, including Master.

HMT ‘COMMANDER FULLERTON’ lost on 12th December 1917

HMT ‘COMMANDER FULLERTON’, was a destroyer, lost on 12th December 1917, trying to protect a convoy in the North Sea.  She was sunk by SMS EMDEN and destroyers of the German Third Half-Flotilla on 12th December 1917. Destroyers PELLEW and PARTRIDGE, together with trawlers COMMANDER FULLERTON, LIVINGSTONE,  LORD ALVERSTONE and TOKIO were escorting a Scandinavian convoy when attacked by the Germans. The Skipper, John William Whelan, from Hull, was killed and all the ships in the convoy were sunk, as were all the escorts with the exception of PELLEW, which was damaged.

SS ‘DIDO’ sunk 26th June 1916

‘DIDO’  was a British Merchant steamer of 4,769grt. On the 26th February 1916 when on route from Hull for India, she hit a mine, when 4 miles NNE from Spurn Light Vessel, North Sea. 28 lives were lost, including Master. Owned by Wilson Line, Hull.

While lying at anchor at 6.15 a.m. during gale force winds and heavy snow squalls, a violent explosion occurred on the port side of the vessel. The chief officer and two crew attempted to lower a boat to inspect the damage but this broke adrift, as it reached the water. In the heavy weather the three men were unable to row back to the ship, which they soon lost sight of in the squall. Fortunately, the boat was soon picked up by the Belgian s.s. MARTHA on her way to the DIDO, in an attempt to pick up those of her crew who were now in the water. Due to the extreme cold and exhaustion they were unable to seize the ropes and life belts thrown to them. The MARTHA also attempted to lower a lifeboat, but were unable due to the heavy sea. The Belgian steamer stood by the DIDO until she sank at 7.20 a.m. then proceeded to Hull. The ship’s papers sank with with the vessel along with a stowaway passenger.

SS MALABAR lost at sea 3rd January 1916

‘MALABAR’ was a steam trawler, completed in 1903 by Cook, Welton & Gemmell Ltd., for the Hull Steam Fishing & Ice Co. Ltd. and registered at Hull as H.754. She had left Hull on 20th December 1915 and was posted missing on 3rd January 1916 in severe weather. The cause of her loss is unknown.There were no survivors.

SS ‘OTHELLO II’, lost 31st October 1915

‘OTHELLO II’,  built by Cook, Welton & Gemmell, Ltd., Beverley in 1907 and operated at the time of her loss by Royal Navy, was a British navy trawler of 206 tons. On October 31st, 1915, ‘OTHELLO II’,  was sunk by a mine from the German submarine UC-6 (Matthias Graf von Schmettow), off Leathercoat. 9 persons were lost.

SS ‘ROMEO’ lost 3rd March 1918

The steamer ‘ROMEO’, James Neale, master, left Scapa on 23 February 1918 bound for Liverpool. She was on Admiralty charter for carrying meat and provisions to the Fleet, but was returning to Liverpool in ballast after having called in at Stornoway, remaining there for six days. She was equipped with a twelve pound gun for defence against enemy submarines.
On 3 March 1918 at 2.40 a.m. she was about 10 miles south of the Mull off Galloway, steaming at 10 knots and zig-zagging. The weather was fine with occassional snow showers, the wind light and the sea smooth. The first officer was in charge on the bridge. There was a lookout on the forecastle head, another on the bridge and one on the gunner´s platform aft. All lights on the ship were carefully screened and no navigation lights were burning.
Suddenly a green and red light appeared off her port bow. Fearful of a collision with another ship, the order was given to show the Romeo´s navigation lights at her bow. This was a fateful mistake as she had been tricked by the German submarine U102into giving away her exact position. Within a couple of minutes a torpedo slammed into the Romeo´s port side between the stoke hole and the engine room. The explosion was terrific and split the ship in two. At first she took a list to port, then righted herself before sinking like a stone in less than two minutes. There was no time for the crew to launch any of the lifeboats and the crew of 37 men was thrown into the water.
The two gun crew managed to cling to a swamped boat and eventually bailed it out. Shortly afterwards they spotted a sailor in the water and hauled him out into the lifeboat, but he later died at about 10.00 a.m. At daylight the two gunners managed to get the mast and sail up before being picked up by the steamship Ardgarvel at 11.00 a.m. and were later landed at Greenock. The only other survivor was the wireless operator, Arthur Sneddon. He was picked up by a trawler and landed at Holyhead by the patrol boat Kilgobnet at 11.00 a.m. on 4 March. In all 29 lives were lost including the Master.

HMT ‘SOUTHWARD HO’, lost 27th May 1915

‘SOUTHWARD HO’ was a 169 GRT steam trawler completed in 1899 by Doig & Broadley for S. T. While & Co. Ltd. and registered at Hull as H.456. She was reported missing on 27 May 1915 and is believed to have been lost approximately 88 nautical miles East by North of Spurn Head as a result of (unspecified) enemy action.There were no survivors.

SS ‘ZARA’ sunk 13th April 1917

The ‘ZARA’ was a 1,331-ton cargo-passenger ship that measured: 257.0 x 35.2. Wm. Hamilton & Co., Port Glasgow built and completed her as Yard No.130 in June 1897 for Bailey & Leetham, Ltd., Hull. In 1903 she was owned by T. Wilson, Sons & Co., Ltd., Hull. In 1917 the registered owner was Ellerman’s Wilson Line, Ltd., Hull. She was torpedoed and sunk by SM U 30, on 13 April 1917, 90 miles W ¾ W from Hellisø Island (60.08N-01.52E), while voyaging from London to Trondhjem, with general cargo. 27 liives were lost.  Eleven members of the crew and 11 passengers were killed. The remaining 17 crew members and 17 passengers set sail in lifeboats for the Norwegian coast. They managed to reach Norway, but five crew members died of exposure on the way there.
