St John The Baptist Church, is a large red-brick, Victorian town church, built in 1878 in the Hessle Road area of Kingston-upon-Hull. The church is within the historic St Martin’s dockland, synonymous with the Hull’s fishing industry and maritime heritage.
The Church’s 1914-18 war memorial was unveiled on 11th August 1821 by Bishop Suffragan of Hull. It is a white marble tablet, listing the names of 302 parish men, in five columns, in alphabetical order.
It includes 102 soldiers from the East Yorkshire regiment, of which 40 men served with the Hull Pal regiments. There are also 73 sailors on the Memorial, including four Ship Skippers, five Chief Engineers, five boy sailors and three Fishermen.
Most of the soldiers recorded on the memorial, were Privates and non Commissioned Officers. There are only two Lieutenants and 13 Sergeants on the memorial. The names also include 142 Privates, 15 Gunners, 5 Guardsmen and 2 Riflemen. Twelve men were Royal Engineers; four soldiers were medics; one fought for Canada and one was an Air mechanic. The average age of the soldiers died is 27, the average age of the sailors was 30 years old.
139 men on the Memorial have no known grave. Most are buried and commemorated in Belgium and France. Five soldiers died in Germany as prisoners of war. Twenty three men are buried in Hull. Most men were born in Hull and lived locally. 33 lived nearby in St Georges Road, 23, men were from Woodcock Street, 23, from Eastbourne Street, 21, from Glasgow street, 17, from Massey Street, 12, from Westbourne Street and many others came from the surrounding neighbourhoods of Hessle Road.
Four men from St Johns, died in 1914, 35 died in 1915, 74 died in 1916, 66 in 1917, 105 men in 1918. 14 men died after the war. Eight men died during the Gallipoli Campaign. Two local teenagers died when HMS Queen Mary sank, during the Battle of Jutland. Ten men died on 13th November 1916, when the Hull pals attacked, the Village of Serre, with two more dying of wounds days later. Another seven men died on 3rd may 1917, when the Hull Pals attacked Oppy Wood, France. Four men died on 29/04/1917 at the battle of Arras. The loss of many Hull ships would similarly devastate the community in a single day.
The striking feature of the Memorial is the great loss of life – 302 names compared to nearby St Matthews Church, with 139 names on their war memorial and the Church of Holy Apostles (Thornton Community Hall), with 137 names, on their Walker Street Memorial.
They include sons, brothers, fathers, husbands and fiancés. Amongst the dead were 38 Teenagers, the youngest only 15 and there are 3 sixteen year olds and two seventeen olds, listed on the St John The Baptist memorial.
Some families suffered more than most. Bradley, Crockett, Gilby, Holdsworth, Kemp, Mackey, Rounding, Skinner, and Towse were only sons, and their deaths ended the male line of their family. Herbert Lowther was an only child. Charles Newby was an orphan. Harold and Tom Marshall on the memorial were father and son.
There are at least seventeen sets of brothers on the memorial – Banks, Bird, Ellerington, Gamble, Hill, Lee, Lilley, Marshall, Oxley, Proctor, Poole, Porter, Richardson, Turner, Sharp, Fred and Herbert Smith, Waddingham and Wilkinson. The Lee brothers died within two days of each other. The Gamble and Turner brothers, were the family’s only sons.
Other men on the memorial, also lost brothers during the war, but are not listed on the memorial. For example, Fred and Sydney Lilley are listed on the memorial, but their third brother, George Lilley also killed, is not. James Stones’ brother, Albert Stones, drowned on 9th May 1917, but is not on the memorial. Similarly, George Bird, 2nd Coldstream Guards, killed at Ypres on 27/10/1914, is not included on the memorial with his two brothers. George Robert Brambles is included on the Memorial, but his brother, Private, James Brambles, 1/5th East Lancs, killed in action, on 24/08/1918, aged 22 is not. Harry Wilkinson is on the memorial, but his brother, William Henry Wilkinson killed on 25/07/1916 aged 35 is not recorded. Another brother not included on the memorial is Richard Farnhill, 1/5th Border regiment, killed on 23/04/1917, aged 26. Harry Edwards is listed on the Memorial, but his two brothers, Herbert and William both killed in the war are inexplicably omitted.
Despite 320 casualties, there could have been many more names added to the memorial. For example, Skipper, William McFee, lost with all hands, on the Hull Trawler, “Egret” is the only crew member listed on the memorial, even though all the other nine crew members lived locally. These were:-
CROWE, E (41), 53 Glasgow St, Hull. Cook
FISHER, George (54), 3 Laura-Grove, Tyne St, Hull. 2nd/Hand
FRANCIS, Septimus (23), 9 Granville-Ave, West Dock St, Hull. Deckhand
McFEE, William (54), 75 Ena St, Boulevard, Hull. Skipper
MEARS, Alfred (22), 3 Fern-Grove, Harrow St, Hull. 3rd/Hand
RIDSDILL, William (27), 6 Cedar-Grove, Eastbourne St, Hull. Chief Engineer
ROBERTS, Clarence (21), 5 Louisa-Terrace, St. George’s Road, Hull. Trimmer
SANDERSON, William (60), 8 Naburn Street, Hull. 2nd/Engineer
SMITH, William (43), 8 Langdale-Crescent, Flinton St, Hull. Bosun
TUTCHER, John (50), 2 Chiltern-Villas, Division Road, Hull. Spare hand
Perhaps these men did not attend church or their families had moved from the area, when the names on the memorial were being collected?
Also not included on the memorial are the hidden casualties of war – the grieving wife’s, children, families and friends, that walked through life, carrying their bereavement to their graves. We can never compute how communities suffered in the First World war, but we can measure the number of fatherless children, left behind. For example, Charles Frederick Fewster, drowned on 10/10/1917, aged 31, left four fatherless children; Alfred Henry Watson, drowned on 31/10/1915, aged 31, left five children; Private, Thomas William Gamble, killed on 14/10/1917, aged 36, had six children; Fisherman, John Fox, killed on 15/02/1916, aged 55, had seven children; Chief Engineer, James Mooney, lost at sea, on the Trawler “Scotland”, left seven children; and Thomas Henry Petherbridge, lost at sea, aged 60, had eleven children. In an era of little welfare provision, these families must have endured great hardship after the war.
Some stories from the war memorial include the first casualty killed in the war – Private, William Ernest Bird, 2nd Coldstream Guards, killed at Ypres, on 26/10/1914, aged 30.
The youngest to die on the memorial, was Ship’s Apprentice, Albert Edward Kemp, killed on the steam ship, “Farnham”, on 19/05/1917, aged just 15 years old, The eldest casualty, was Chief Engineer, Joseph William Atkinson, lost on the steam ship “Tummel”, on 24/06/1916, aged 64. The last official casualty on the memorial, was Albert Edward Poole, another sailor, on 11th August 1920, aged 39.
Lieutenant, Ivan Hutchinson enlisted in 1915, rose through the ranks and was killed by a sniper, on 22/04/1918, aged 22. He was an Old Hymerian and worked for Reckitt’s.
Some like, Private, Walter Stanley Murray, 1/4th EYR, was accidentally killed by a comrade, in the trenches, when their rifle misfired. Deck Hand, Charles Shutwell Brown, HMT “Tenby Castle”, was accidentally killed on 07/02/1918, in Lerwick Harbour, while inspecting faulty torpedoes. Similarly, Thomas Henry Petherbridge died when his ship accidentally exploded leaving Grimsby. A reminder that war was a dangerous place even away from the fighting.
Some men died in agonising ways, like, Private, Frederick Charles Turner, who died of gas wounds, aged 28 and Gunner, William Robert Nelson, who died of multiple wounds, aged 30.
Private, Charles Eyre, severely wounded at Serre, was discharged from army, ten months later and died on 26/08/1918, aged 28. Like many discharged servicemen, Eyre is not included in the CWGC records, but someone remembered him, on this Church memorial
Private, George Stanley Sargerson, 15th Durham Light Infantry, had only been in France, for 2 weeks, when he was killed, aged 18. Private, John Musk, aged 27, was killed at Loos, after just 8 days, at the front. Guardsman, Wilfred Gould, was killed after only three weeks, in France, on 14/03/1915, aged 21.
Seven men on the Memorial were decorated for bravery, (not shown on the Memorial). These were, Company Sergeant Major, Albert Bird, MM, 1st Coldstream Guards, awarded the Military Medal (MM) for valour; Private, Harold Chapman, MM, awarded the same, during a trench raid, in July 1916; and Private, Alfred William Johnson MM, 1st Coldstream Guards, awarded the Military Medal for rescuing wounded. Lieutenant, Edward Reeves Mackey, DCM was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal (DCM), whilst serving as a Sergeant in the Machine Gun Corps. Sergeant, Ernest Marritt, DCM, 11th East Yorkshire Regiment, was similarly recognised, when he died capturing a machine gun, on 8th November 1917. Corporal, Thomas Ernest Saunderson, DCM, 10th East Yorkshire Regiment, died of wounds capturing four enemy trenches. Skipper, Albert Edward Sayers, DSC, Royal Naval Reserve, was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross (DSC), on 10th September 1915, for services in the Dardanelles’. Fisherman, William Jordan Rice Watson, was mentioned in despatches for his good conduct, when his ship sank on 01/02/1917.
The majority of men on the memorial were born in Hull and Yorkshire. However, Corporal, William John Tidball, 1/4th East Yorkshire Regiment, was born in Barking, Essex and Able Seaman, William Edward Warman, was born in Folkestone, Kent.
Lieutenant, Norman Ford, Royal Flying Corps, was an Australia, born and married in Queensland. He was a qualified gold miner, working in the West African gold coast. He travelled to Hull in 1915 to visit his Auntie, Lena and enlisted in the Royal Engineers. He was commissioned into the Royal Flying Corps, where he trained pilots and was killed in a flying accident in the Ardennes. His connection with Hull might be tenuous, but the Community honoured an Australian on their memorial.
There is one unidentified man on the memorial. This is Alexander Farquhar, believed to be a Scottish soldier, with an unknown local connection. Two other men, William Watson and Gunner, John Percy Wilson, both served in the war and died in Hull, long after the war ended. They were both included on the memorial.
