Albert and Margaret Cockerill lost 3 sons in the war. The family worked in the Oil Mill industries around Witham and lived at 8 St Johns Place, York Street, 231 Wincolmlee and at 5 Oak Terrace, Swann Street.
PRIVATE FRANK COCKERILL 12/1275. Born in 1891, Frank was the eldest of three sons to Albert and Margaret Cockerill. An Oil Miller by trade, he enlisted at City Hall on 28th December 1914 joining the 12th Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment, ‘The Sportsmen’, 3rd Hull Pals. He died on the 16th August 1916 and is buried in Le Touret Military Cemetery; he was 25 years old.
Private, ALBERT COCKERILL, MGC, was born in Hull 1896. Another Oil Miller , he enlisted in the 13th EYR, was transferred to the Machine Gun Corp and was killed on the 30th December 1916, age 20. His body was not recovered and he is commemorated on the memorial to the missing at Thiepval. His death was reported in the Hull Daily Mail on the 10th January 1917, with his photograph.
Their third son, Private, EDWARD COCKERILL, 22643, 1st EYR, was born in Hull in 1898. He was killed on the 15th June 1917, aged 18 and is buried at Cojeul.
